DIY Yarn Embroidered Top

I was shopping at Zara last week, and I came across this really cool embroidered yarn art top. I was so intrigued because it was so simple but really clever and I wanted it! It was 39.99 and I knew I could make my own DIY yarn embroidered top.

How to make a DIY yarn embroidered top from Zara – quick easy steps!

First I found this similar black fleece top in the juniors department at H&M for 12.99. I then had a skein of yarn in a silver color (charisma sorbet) that I had bought when I was making my pom pom mobile (you can read all about that here) that would really give me the look I was going for.

  • Pin yarn down to the front of the top for art and placement. You should use straight pins, I only had safety pins readily available. My initial image looks like Frankensteins bride!
  • When starting take the end of the yarn wind your sewing thread multiple times to finish end of yarn so it doesn’t unravel.
  • Using thread and needle hand sew down middle of the yarn and follow along shape of yarn pinned. remove pins as you secure the yarn.
  • At the end of the yarn use same method and wrap sewing thread around end then sew through the garment to secure it down

My Illustration skills came in handy, as I made my daughter Emma model while I did a quick line drawing of her face. I learned quick that the sketch had to be simplified because you cannot get detail out of yarn string in the thickness I was using. You can use my line drawing that I have set up to size in this post for an easy traceable image for your diy yarn embroidered top.

So there you have it! A DIY embroidered yarn top which looks very similar to the zara top I found it the store. Total cost:

TOTAL COST OF MY ZARA KNOCK OFF TOP- $17.48!

total savings of 22.51 more then half the cost of the Zara top! This afforded me to buy a yellow sweater that I am going to do a yarn effect ont he sleeves…Stay tuned!
