On this last day of 2020, I am inspired to think about what I have done in this past difficult year and what I plan on doing for my new year of 2021. In this post I have created an inspirational January 2021 calendar to share with everyone.

The inspiration behind creating this
Years ago in 2012 my family, my sister’s family, and my father’s family experienced Hurricane Sandy. It was a terrible moment in our lives. However, as I stated in past posts; when we experience moments of adversity there are moments of beauty to be found in them. How is this? So this is a perfect story to explain this.
We lost the use of our home from flooding, our cars, a job, the schools both our children attended. We were left in a very vulnerable place and we had to reach deep down to our foundation of who we were. This meant depending on the people of importance around us.
Thankfully our other sister & brother-in-law took all of us into their home where we lived together for the first few weeks. During this time my father, Jack was diagnosed with lymphoma and lost his life one year after the hurricane. This experience was also what made my sister Nicole and I create Double Arrow Designs; you can read about that here.
How this inspirational calendar came to be
My daughter Emma who was 10 at the time decided to make my dad, her “pop pop” something that would ease his days and give him something to look forward to. She created “Emma’s box of W.O.W.” (Words of Wisdom) she found beautiful quotes and hand wrote them on strips of colored construction paper. Then found a white box that she decorated and placed all the strips inside.
She presented this to her “pop pop” so that each morning he could wake up and open the box. He looked forward to an inspirational quote for the day. He would tell me months later how this was such a beautiful gift from her and how much it had meant to him.
Without these life events, Emma wouldn’t have had the perspective to think about what would make something brighter for someone else. She later created these boxes as Christmas gifts the following year for the women in our family.
Why in 2020 I think of inspiration
As we have experience 2020, life became very difficult for many. Once again as a family we were given our own set of obstacles. I won’t bore you with them because we all have our own from this year! The difference for us was the perspective we had from the hurricane in 2012. I think many people learned what we did so many years back. That all we really have in this life is the love and connection with others, and the perspective we have to have to keep moving forward.
We get to choose what we think about
So as I was riding the Subway on my way to work this morning, there is an absence of commuters. They have companies and jobs that are allowing them to continue to work remotely. I do not work for such a company. I ask myself the same question. “Why, after 30 years of the same commute, am I still here?” I refuse to be resentful.
There must be a reason why I am here and not take this time for granted. So this morning the idea of making this inspirational January 2021 calendar popped into my head. Without this time I may not have thought about this. Yes it’s all about our perspective!
How I created this inspirational calendar
Using my daughter as inspiration I decided to make this calendar. There are so many people out there that could use an inspirational quote to start their day. To start with the perspective that “Today is going to be a good day“~ Dr. Seuss. (This was one of her quotes in her box of “W.O.W”) I wanted to start the new year of 2021 with an optimistic outlook. That most things are possible, and they are! We just have to believe in them.
What I plan for 2021
My own personal plan is to continue to create my posts, and to decide what my next chapter in my life will be as my kids are away at college.
