Looking for a thoughtful, handmade way to say thank you? This DIY thank you gift basket is a beautiful and personal way to show appreciation. I created this personalized gift basket for a fellow creative who helped me with photography, and it turned into one of my favorite handmade thank-you gift ideas ever.
In this tutorial, I’ll walk you step by step through how to make a custom gift basket with etched wine glasses, stenciled tea towels, and stamped tissue paper. I decided to put together a DIY thank-you gift basket filled with customized, handmade items. The result was a one-of-a-kind gift basket that felt thoughtful, creative, and truly special.
What should I put in a thank-you gift basket?
A great thank-you gift basket includes a mix of useful items (like tea towels or glasses), a personal note, and something special like wine or a homemade item.
What I Added to My DIY Thank You Gift Basket
Here’s what I included in my handmade gift basket:
- Etched wine glasses
- Stenciled tea towels
- A bottle of wine (to go with the glasses!)
- Stamped tissue paper for wrapping
- A wicker basket
- A handwritten thank-you note
How to Etch Wine Glasses (DIY Step-by-Step)
Custom etched wine glasses are one of my favorite handmade gifts because they look high-end but are actually easy to make.
- Wash and dry the wine glasses you’ll be etching.
- Purchase or use the free stencil file I’ve included below.
- Print your stencil and cut it out using contact paper.
- Trim the stencil to fit your glass and adhere it firmly in place.
- Apply etching cream with a small sponge brush.
- Follow the cream’s directions for timing and care.
- Rinse off the cream and carefully remove the stencil.
You’ll be left with beautiful, customized wine glasses that look professionally made.

To emphasize my DIY gift basket, I took the tissue and personalized it to add another layer to my custom basket. I used my Silhouette machine to create this stencil and decided on arrows to brand my gift.

How to Stencil Tea Towels
These stenciled tea towels add such a fun, whimsical layer to the gift basket and make the whole thing feel cohesive.
- Purchase cotton tea towels.
- Wash and dry the towels to prep the fabric for stenciling.
- Purchase or use the free arrow stencil file included below.
- Print the stencil onto contact paper.
- Position the stencil on the towel.
- Use fabric paint and a stencil brush to stipple the design.
- Don’t overload your brush—you can always add more paint.
- Let the paint dry, then peel off the stencil.
- Set the paint with an iron so it lasts through washing.
I used arrows to tie into my branding and to keep everything playful and simple.
How I Personalized the Tissue Paper
To take this DIY thank you gift basket one step further, I customized the tissue paper that wraps the wine glasses. This is such a small detail, but it adds another layer of thoughtfulness to the final gift.
I used my Silhouette machine to create a stencil and stamped arrows onto the tissue paper. It was quick, easy, and made the whole gift basket feel extra special.

More Item Ideas for a Personalized Thank You Gift Basket
One of my favorite parts about putting together a DIY thank-you gift basket is that you can completely customize it to the person you’re gifting it to. There’s no “right” or “wrong” combination of items—just thoughtful details that show you really considered what they might love or use.
If you’re not sure what to include, here are some extra gift basket ideas you can mix and match depending on the person, occasion, or season: If you’re gifting to another creative (like I was), these ideas feel extra thoughtful:
- A handmade mug or ceramic cup
- A sketchbook or small art notebook
- Brush pens, paint pens, or calligraphy markers
- A personalized pencil pouch
- Custom vinyl decals
- A mini framed print or quote
- Washi tape or stationery sets
- A custom stamp with their name or brand
These are great items to tuck into the basket alongside your handmade pieces like etched glasses or stenciled tea towels.
Want your gift basket to feel warm and comforting? Try adding:
- A small scented candle
- Cozy socks or slippers
- Gourmet tea or coffee
- Local honey or artisan chocolate
- A soft kitchen towel or dishcloth
- A handmade soap or lotion bar
These kinds of items make your gift basket feel more like a cozy care package instead of just “stuff in a basket.”
Food + Drink Gift Basket Ideas
Food always makes a gift basket better. A few simple additions can really elevate the whole thing:
- A small box of gourmet cookies
- Chocolate truffles or caramels
- Fancy crackers
- Cheese spread or jam
- A mini bottle of olive oil
- Wine accessories (corkscrew, wine stopper, charms)
- A handwritten recipe card
If you’re including wine as I did, pairing it with a small snack or wine accessory makes the basket feel complete and intentional.
Budget-Friendly Filler Items
You don’t need to spend a lot to make your basket look full and thoughtful. Some easy filler ideas:
- Handmade gift tags
- Printed quote cards
- Ribbon-tied bundles of napkins
- Mini notebooks
- Tea bags tied with twine
- Seed packets for gardeners
- A small plant or succulent
These little touches add visual interest and personality without blowing your budget.

Final Thoughts on Creating a DIY Thank You Gift Basket
Creating a DIY thank you gift basket is one of my favorite ways to show appreciation because it feels personal in a way store-bought gifts just don’t. You don’t need to be a professional crafter or have fancy tools to make something meaningful. The heart of this project is simply being thoughtful and intentional.
What I love most about handmade gifts is that they slow you down. You’re not just clicking “add to cart” and calling it done—you’re thinking about the person, choosing items that fit their personality, and adding small details that make the gift feel truly theirs. Whether it’s a stenciled tea towel, etched wine glass, or even just a handwritten note, those little handmade elements are what people remember.
Another great thing about DIY gift baskets is how flexible they are. You can easily adjust this idea for:
- Hostess gifts
- Teacher appreciation gifts
- Thank-you gifts for friends
- Housewarming gifts
- Creative collaborator thank-you gifts
- Holiday or seasonal gifting
Once you make one gift basket, you’ll start seeing ideas everywhere. That’s usually how it goes with DIY projects—you finish one and immediately want to make another.
If you’re short on time, you can simplify the project by just customizing one item in your basket instead of all of them. Even one handmade piece instantly transforms the entire gift. And if you love details like I do, layering custom touches—like stamped tissue paper, ribbon, and tags—makes the whole presentation feel extra special.
Most importantly, don’t overthink it. Your gift doesn’t need to be perfect to be meaningful. What matters is that someone will open it and feel seen, appreciated, and celebrated. That’s the real magic of a DIY thank you gift basket.
