16 Open When Letters for Your Boyfriend or Girlfriend: Ideas and What to Write
Originally published on September 16, 2025. Updated on October 3, 2026
Open when letters are notes you write ahead of time, seal in separate envelopes, and label for a particular moment—like “Open when you miss me” or “Open when you need a good laugh.” They give your boyfriend or girlfriend something personal to reach for when you can’t be there.
To make your own, start with a few situations your partner will recognize. Write a short message for each one, add an optional photo or small surprise, and label the envelope so they know when to open it.
I designed my Open When labels to help turn those individual notes into a coordinated gift. Below, you’ll find 16 ideas with sample messages and matching fillers, plus instructions for making your own envelopes.

These work for a birthday, anniversary, Christmas gift, or a stretch of time apart. You can also make a small bundle simply because you want to.

What Do You Write in Open When Letters?
Write something that fits the moment on the envelope. A letter for a stressful day might offer encouragement; one for a birthday might celebrate a favorite memory.
If you’re staring at a blank page, use this simple structure:
- Acknowledge the moment: “I wish I could sit beside you today.”
- Add something personal: Mention a memory, an inside joke, or something you admire about them.
- End with a small connection: Suggest a song, a future plan, or a call when they feel like talking.
For example:
“I wish I could sit beside you today. I keep thinking about that rainy afternoon when we ordered takeout and watched movies. Put on our favorite song, and know that I’m looking forward to our next ordinary day together.” Use the examples below as starting points. Change the details so the finished letters sound like you.
16 Open When Letter Ideas for Your Boyfriend or Girlfriend

You don’t need to make every envelope. Choose the ones that suit your relationship, and use a blank label for a moment that means something to the two of you.
1. Open Now
Start with a letter explaining the gift. Place this envelope on top of the bundle.
What to write:
“I made these for the days when you could use a little extra love, a laugh, or a reminder of us. Open each envelope when its moment comes. There’s no deadline—these are yours to enjoy whenever you need them.”
What to put inside: A favorite photo of you together and a short note explaining how the envelopes work.
2. Open When You Need Some Extra Love
Make this one specific. Name the small things you notice and appreciate.
What to write:
“I love how you remember the little things I tell you. I love your laugh, and I love that you can make an ordinary afternoon feel like something I’ll want to remember.”
What to put inside: A folded list of five things you love about them.
3. Open When You Miss My Kisses
Keep this note sweet, silly, or romantic—whatever feels natural for you.
What to write:
“Saving a real kiss for the next time I see you. Until then, this envelope will have to do. Consider it a very small delivery of affection.”
What to put inside: Paper hearts, a kiss doodle, or a few wrapped chocolates if you’re giving the bundle in person.
4. Open When You Can’t Sleep
Write a gentle note that doesn’t ask them to do much.
What to write:
“You don’t have to solve tomorrow tonight. I wish we were having one of our sleepy conversations about absolutely nothing. Here’s a little story to keep you company.”
What to put inside: A comforting memory, a short poem you wrote, or a link to a quiet playlist.
5. Open When It’s Your Birthday
Celebrate who they are and what you’re looking forward to sharing.
What to write:
“Happy birthday to my favorite person to make plans with—and cancel plans with when we’d rather stay home. One of my favorite memories from this year is ____. This year, I hope we get to ____.”
What to put inside: A birthday photo, a handwritten invitation to a date, or an optional gift card.
6. Open When You’re Feeling Sad
Offer company without putting pressure on them to feel better immediately.
What to write:
“You don’t have to put on a cheerful face for me. I care about you on the difficult days, too. If you want to talk, I’m here to listen. If you’d rather have some quiet company, that’s okay.”
What to put inside: A reassuring note or a photo connected to a comforting memory.
7. Open When You Miss My Scent
This envelope can be a small reminder of something familiar.
What to write:
“Here’s a little reminder of being close. I hope it brings back something ordinary and good—like borrowing my sweatshirt or sitting beside me on the couch.”
What to put inside: A small piece of fabric with a familiar scent, only if you know your partner enjoys it and isn’t sensitive to fragrance. Let it dry before enclosing it. A photo of their favorite borrowed sweatshirt is a fragrance-free alternative.
8. Open When You’re Missing Me
Focus on the everyday details that make your relationship yours.
What to write:
“I miss the little things, too: hearing about your day, choosing something to watch, and laughing at jokes that wouldn’t make sense to anyone else. What’s one ordinary thing you want us to do next time we’re together?”
What to put inside: A photo with a memory written on the back or a short list of future plans.
9. Open When You Want to See Me
Give this envelope something visual or something they can hear.
What to write:
“Here’s my face until I can be there in person. I picked this photo because it reminds me of ____. Send me your favorite photo of us when you feel like it.”
What to put inside: A photo strip or a QR code linking to a personal video message. Test the link on another device before sealing the envelope.
10. Open When You Need a Good Laugh
Your shared sense of humor is the best starting point.
What to write:
“Please take a moment to remember the time we ____. I still can’t think about it without laughing. For the record, I’m very glad you’re the person I get to be ridiculous with.”
What to put inside: A funny photo, a printed joke, or a tiny comic starring the two of you.
11. Open When We’ve Had a Fight
Use this letter to invite a calmer conversation. Avoid guessing who will be right or writing an apology for something that hasn’t happened.
What to write:
“I care about you, even when we disagree. I want to understand what you’re feeling and explain myself more clearly, too. Let’s take the time we need, then talk when we’re both ready to listen.”
What to put inside: A note suggesting a walk or a conversation when you both feel ready. The letter can open the door, but it shouldn’t replace talking things through.
12. Open When We’ve Just Said Goodbye
This is for the trip home after a visit or the first evening of a temporary separation.
What to write:
“The first little while after goodbye always feels different. I’m glad we had that time together. My favorite moment from this visit was ____, and I wanted you to have that memory in writing.”
What to put inside: A ticket stub, a photo from the visit, or a note about your next plan if one is already arranged.
13. Open When You’ve Had a Stressful Day
Offer encouragement without adding another task.
What to write:
“That sounds like a lot for one day. You don’t need to have everything figured out this evening. I admire the effort you put into things, including the effort nobody else sees.”
What to put inside: A doodle, a favorite tea packet, or a small coffee gift card.
14. Open When You’re Feeling Sick
Keep it cozy and simple.
What to write:
“I wish I could drop off your favorite comfort food and take over the boring chores for a bit. For now, here’s a small reminder that someone is thinking about you.”
What to put inside: Tissues, a comforting note, or a list of easy movies to watch while resting.
15. Open When You’re Bored
Give them a few options rather than a long list.
What to write:
“Choose your adventure: send me your most dramatic selfie, make a playlist with five songs that remind you of us, or plan our imaginary weekend away. Unlimited pretend budget.”
What to put inside: A mini puzzle, conversation questions, or a homemade date idea card.
16. Open When You Need a Reminder of Us
Use a blank label to create an envelope about your own relationship.
What to write:
“One small moment I never want to forget is ____. You might not even remember it, but it mattered to me because ____. I wanted you to know.”
What to put inside: A meaningful receipt, a copied ticket, a photo, or a tiny drawing of a place you both love.
You could also label this envelope “Open on our anniversary” or “Open when we’re apart for Christmas.”
First open when letter

- This letter should be the first one opened, so they know what to expect:
- No peeking!
- Open only when the mood applies at the moment.
- Open sparingly, make them last.
- Let me know when you open one.
- Save them to remember all that we have
- How to Make Your Open When Letters
- Gather Your Supplies
- You’ll need:
- Paper or note cards
- Envelopes
- A pen
- Printable labels or a pen for writing your own
- Scissors and glue or double-sided tape if using labels
- Optional photos and small fillers
- Ribbon or a small box to hold the finished set
- My labels are designed for envelopes measuring 4⅜ × 5¾ inches. If you already have envelopes, check the fit before printing and cutting the whole set.
- A letter and a photograph are enough. You don’t need to buy a present for every envelope.
- Write and Match the Letters
- Choose your prompts first, then write the notes before attaching the labels. This makes it easier to change an idea or switch a message to a different envelope.
- Lay out each letter beside its matching label and filler. Check that everything fits comfortably before sealing it.
- For thicker surprises, use a small gift bag or box with an Open When label instead.
- Label and Bundle the Envelopes
- Make the opening instruction easy to read. You can print labels, write directly on the envelopes, or attach a handwritten tag.
- Place “Open Now” on top. Tie the finished set with ribbon or arrange it in a small box so none of the envelopes get bent.
- For a Christmas gift, add a holiday ribbon or gift tag to the outside. The letters themselves can stay useful throughout the year.
- Free Envelope Template and Printable Open When Labels
- If you enjoy making the packaging, use my free envelope template to create your own envelopes from paper you already have.
- The envelope template creates the envelope itself; it does not include prewritten love letters.
- To assemble it:
- Print the template and cut around the outside edge.
- Crease along the dotted fold lines.
- Fold the two small side tabs inward.
- Fold the bottom flap up and attach it to the side tabs with glue or double-sided tape.
- Let any glue dry, then insert your note and fold down the top flap.
- Keep adhesive along the joining edges so you don’t accidentally glue the envelope shut inside.
- For coordinating designs, browse my Open When printable collection on Etsy. Check the individual listing for the included labels, file details, and price.
- My printable designs are for personal use only. Please do not sell, alter, redistribute, or claim the designs as your own.
- Tips for Long-Distance Open When Letters
- For a partner who lives far away, include a mix of comfort, humor, and things to look forward to. A bundle made entirely of “I miss you” notes can start to feel repetitive.
- Try combining:
- A favorite shared memory
- A funny story they haven’t heard
- A photo with a handwritten caption
- An invitation to a video date
- A note celebrating something they’re working toward
- If you include private video or audio links, check that your partner can open them without needing your account.
- When mailing the bundle, flat paper keepsakes are easiest to package. Put the envelopes inside a protective outer mailer or box, and check your carrier’s rules before adding food, liquids, or bulky gifts.
