Halloween College Care Package Ideas for the Ultimate Spooky Surprise
Halloween is the perfect excuse to send your college student a surprise from home!
When my daughter Emma was away at college, I loved putting together care packages filled with little things I knew would make her smile. For Halloween, I wanted to create something that felt festive from the second she opened the box.
I filled her Halloween college care package with favorite candy, snacks, cozy finds, and a few inexpensive Halloween surprises. Then I decorated everything so opening the box became part of the fun.
If you’re putting together a Halloween care package for your own college student, I’m sharing what I included, plus plenty of ideas you can use to create your own.

What to Put in a Halloween College Care Package
The best college care packages are a mix of things your student wants and things they actually need. Halloween candy is an obvious choice, but don’t feel like everything inside your box needs to have a pumpkin or ghost on it! I like to start with a few favorite treats and then add cozy items, practical essentials, and something personal from home.
Here are some easy ideas:
- Favorite Halloween candy
- Microwave popcorn
- Chips and snack packs
- Granola or protein bars
- Hot chocolate
- Coffee or tea
- Cozy socks
- Face masks and self care items
- Halloween stickers
- Battery operated string lights
- Halloween window clings
- A fun mug
- Small card game
- Gift cards
- School supplies
- College spirit gear
And don’t forget the everyday things they always seem to need. If you’re already shipping a box, add those toiletries, snacks, or little necessities they would normally have to buy themselves.
TIP: Add a few everyday essentials your college student needs anyway. You are already shipping the box, so there is no reason it has to be filled entirely with Halloween items!
Start With Their Favorite Halloween Treats
Let’s be honest, Halloween calls for candy. Instead of buying a giant assortment, I like choosing the treats I know my college student actually likes. Chocolate, gummy candy, snack size favorites, popcorn, pretzels, or homemade treats that travel well are all easy additions. You can also turn everyday snacks into Halloween treats with simple packaging.
Make Your Own Halloween Treat Bags
This is such an easy way to make inexpensive snacks feel special. Fill clear zipper or treat bags with different goodies and give each one a Halloween theme.
Try:
- Bugs & Kisses: gummy worms, gummy bugs and chocolate kisses
- Witch’s Nails: candy corn or colorful candies
- Crunchy Treats: popcorn, pretzels or snack mix
- You don’t need to buy expensive Halloween themed food. Sometimes it’s all about how you package it.
Add Something Cozy for Fall
Halloween also happens to fall right when college campuses are starting to get chilly. A pair of cozy socks is one of my favorite additions because they’re inexpensive, useful, and don’t take up much room in the box.
Other cozy ideas include:
- Fuzzy socks
- Small throw blanket
- Hot cocoa
- Tea
- Slippers
- Fall scented hand cream
- Lip balm
- Cozy pajamas
Choose something you know your student will actually use rather than filling the box with things just because they’re Halloween themed.
Printable Labels for Halloween care package
I created these fun printable labels that will make this Halloween care package super fun for your college student to open up. What’s great about this is it can be used for any college student. Take a look at the printable labels that are included in this post.
Halloween care package labels
Flap labels were sized to a medium size flat rate USPS box; however, you can still use these on a large flat rate USPS box, just center the label and use more of the white paper that surrounds them. Shop my Etsy store for a variety of care Package labels.
- Flap Labels- so when the box is opened, your theme is there!
- Chocolate bar wrapper
- Headers for bugs and kisses, Happy Halloween, witch’s nails, and crunchy treats
- Tags, for additional items
- Trick or treat “smell my feet” – perfect for themed socks that will be cozy for the fall
Box for your Halloween care package box
Go to your local USPS location and pick up a box for free! All labels can be sized down. My printable Halloween labels have been sized for USPS flat rate boxes, however, you can also use an amazon box that you may have, just print out the labels and size to what you need..
- USPS flat rate box sizes:
- Large flaps are 11 3/4 – 12″x6″
- Medium size ( this is more a rectangle box) flaps: 10 3/4″x 4 1/4″, 8 1/4″x 4 1/4″
- Small 8.5″x5.5″
First step is to place flap labels on box
These have been sized for the medium-size flat rate USPS box.
- The “Happy Halloween” & “Trick or Treat” can be cut out and either glued or printed on sticker sheets and placed on flaps- see my images for placement.
- All-over printed bats and spider paper can be cut down and sized to the other flaps.
Header cards for treats
I used sandwich sized zipper bags for my treats, I sized the header labels specific to these. Print this out on card stock for a heavier header. You can use regular paper as well and secure either by stapling or taping header card folded in half at top of zipper bag.
Halloween care package labels
In addition, I made some cute labels, you can also print these out on cardstock. There is a hole. Use a hole puncher at the top and thread a thin ribbon. Tie ribbon around item and tie in a pretty bow!
Sock wrapper
Because who couldn’t use another pair of socks? I found a cute pair of Halloween ones for Emma. Cut the wrapper out, then taped for a complete look.
Paper for care package printables
- Printable White Sticker Paper– Perfect to use with your printer, once printed cut to size, and stick on!
- Cardstock paper– use this for the header cards so they can hold your zip lock tops, just print then use some glue stick or double sided tape
- Regular print paper– yep you can also use this! Again, print then use either glue stick or double sided tape
CARD STOCK HACK: No card stock on hand? easy! take your Halloween printable and glue stick it to another piece of blank paper. Then cut out your printable, there you have it, a thicker printable label.
Your box is now ready to fill! How easy was that?
Make Easy Ghost Lollipops
I love adding a small DIY touch to a care package, and these little ghost lollipops couldn’t be easier.
Cut white tissue paper into small squares and place one over the top of each lollipop.
Tie orange or black ribbon underneath the candy, then use a black marker to add two eyes and a mouth.
That’s it.
Scatter a few throughout the box and suddenly an ordinary lollipop becomes part of your Halloween theme.
Add Dorm Friendly Halloween Decorations
A college dorm doesn’t give you much room for decorating, so think small.
Battery operated string lights, removable window clings, paper bats, stickers, and small tabletop decorations can make a dorm room feel festive without taking up valuable space.
Some fun ideas include:
- Battery operated Halloween lights
- Removable wall decals
- Halloween window clings
- Paper bats
- Faux spiderwebs
- Halloween stickers
- Small pumpkins
- Mini seasonal signs
Always keep your student’s dorm rules in mind. Battery operated and removable decorations are usually much easier for a dorm than anything permanent.
- Use paper towels and some ribbon and make “ghosts” out of lollipops
- I used 1/2 a paper towel then cut that in half for two squares
- wrap around head of lollipop, then tied with black and orange ribbon
- used a Sharpie and drew a ghost face!
- Super simple and easy to do!

Add something that could only come from you.
Include a handwritten note, family photo, picture of the family pet, favorite homemade treat, or even an inside joke.
Especially for a freshman experiencing their first fall semester away, something familiar from home can mean more than anything else inside the box.

You definitely don’t need to spend a lot to make a great Halloween college care package.Start by setting a budget and then shop your own house before buying anything.You may already have tissue paper, ribbon, treat bags, stickers, or Halloween craft supplies you can use.
Dollar stores and discount sections are also great for small seasonal additions.My biggest tip is to spend your money on things your student will actually eat or use.The decorations are there to make those everyday items feel special.
How to Pack a College Halloween Care Package
Once you’ve gathered everything, it’s time to pack your box. Place heavier items toward the bottom and lighter items toward the top. Make sure anything that could leak is sealed inside a separate plastic bag, and protect anything breakable before adding it to the box.
Use tissue paper or other lightweight packing material to fill empty spaces so everything doesn’t shift around during shipping.Before you tape it closed, take one last look.
- Candy? Check.
- Something cozy? Check.
- Favorite snacks? Check.
- A little piece of home? Definitely check.
When Should You Send a Halloween Care Package?
I would rather have a Halloween package arrive a few days early than have it show up after October 31. Check your shipping carrier’s current delivery estimate and work backward from Halloween, leaving yourself a little extra time for possible delays.
If you’re sending a package to a college mailroom, remember that there may also be a delay between when the carrier delivers the package and when your student is notified that it’s ready for pickup.
