Decoupage Pumpkins: DIY Non-Carving Decorative Styles for Fall

When fall rolls around, pumpkins instantly become the centerpiece of seasonal décor. But what if you want something chic, long-lasting, and totally mess-free? That’s where decoupage pumpkins come in. This easy DIY craft skips the carving knife and lets you transform simple mini pumpkins into decorative styles that look elevated, elegant, and fall-ready.

For this project, I used mini pumpkins from Trader Joe’s, a black-and-white toile tissue, Mod Podge, and gold leaf paint. The result? French-inspired pumpkins that blend farmhouse charm with timeless style.

Best of all, I’d rate this craft as beginner-friendly, no special skills required, just a little patience with the decoupage process. If you can cut, paste, and paint, you can absolutely make these!

Why Try Decoupage Pumpkins?

Carved pumpkins are fun, but they don’t last long. Decoupage is a non-carving alternative that keeps your pumpkins looking fresh throughout the season. Plus, you can play with endless decorative styles, floral prints, bold patterns, or classic toile, for a look that matches your home décor.

Styling Ideas for Your Decoupage Pumpkins

  • Table Centerpieces – These chic pumpkins make the perfect addition to a Thanksgiving tablescape or any autumn get-together. Cluster a few down the center of your table with candles and greenery for a cozy, inviting look.
  • Mantel Displays – Looking for easy fall décor that you can set up in minutes? Line these pumpkins across your mantel, mix in a garland or two, and you’ve got instant seasonal charm.
  • Entryway Accents – I’ll be adding mine to my fall entryway display (watch for my next DIY project!). They’re a warm, welcoming touch that greets guests the moment they walk in.
  • Non-Carving Family Craft Nights – Want a family-friendly pumpkin craft without the mess or sharp tools? Decoupage pumpkins are perfect for kids and adults alike—creative, safe, and fun to make together.

Supplies You’ll Need

  • Mini pumpkins (real or faux)
  • Black-and-white toile tissue or napkin print
  • Mod Podge (decoupage glue/sealer)
  • Small paintbrush or sponge brush
  • Scissors
  • Gold leaf paint (optional, for stems)

Pumpkins

I scooped up these mini pumpkins at Trader Joe’s for just 99 cents each—such a steal for seasonal décor! If you’d rather go the reusable route, faux white pumpkins from Amazon are a great option too (and the cost per pumpkin is pretty much the same). The bonus with faux? So you only have to decoupage them once, and you’ll have chic little pumpkins to pull out year after year. Plus, I love that they come with sturdy stems, perfect for adding a little extra flair with paint or metallic touches.

Choosing the Perfect Toile Print

For this project, I went with a classic black-and-white toile pattern, a timeless French-inspired design filled with detailed motifs and pastoral scenes. The high-contrast print gives the pumpkins a crisp, elegant look that pairs beautifully with fall décor.

I used tissue paper for mine, but napkins work just as well. Just remember: if you’re using a napkin, peel away the backing ply before applying it with Mod Podge so the design adheres smoothly.

While I chose a classic black-and-white toile for a chic, French-inspired look, the beauty of decoupage pumpkins is that you’re not limited to one style. You can use almost any printed tissue or napkin to create endless variations—each one giving your pumpkins a completely new personality.

Here are a few fun print ideas to try:

  • Florals – for a soft, romantic, cottage-core vibe
  • Plaid or Checks – perfect for cozy farmhouse or autumn looks
  • Seasonal Motifs – leaves, acorns, or even holiday snowflakes for festive flair
  • Geometric or Modern Patterns – bold stripes, dots, or abstract prints for a contemporary twist
  • Metallics or Foil Prints – glamorous accents that shimmer under candlelight

With so many options, you can customize your decoupage pumpkins to fit your exact décor style, or even switch them up each season. Amazon has a variety pack if you just want to play around with different designs and motifs

Picking the Right Mod Podge Finish

Mod Podge is the magic ingredient that makes this project work, but the finish you choose can completely change the look of your pumpkins. So if you love a soft, understated vibe, go with matte. For a bit of sheen without going over the top, satin is a perfect middle ground. And if you want your pumpkins to really shine and feel luxe, choose a high-luster or gloss finish. Think of it as the topcoat that pulls your whole design together.

Adding Luxe Stems with a Gold Leaf Paint Pen

One of my favorite finishing touches was transforming the stems with a metallic gold leaf paint pen. Because the color had just the right luster, rich and warm without looking too brassy, and it instantly elevated the whole look. I used the Krylon 18K Gold Leaf pen, and I was so impressed with how smoothly it applied. So thanks to the felt-tip nib, the paint flowed easily into the natural grooves of the pumpkin stems, giving them a realistic, plated effect. It’s such a simple step, but it makes the pumpkins look truly high-end.

Step-by-Step DIY Instructions

1. Prepare Your Pumpkins
Wipe each pumpkin clean and dry to help the tissue stick. Don’t forget to buy ones with stems, trim if needed.

2. Cut Out the Motifs
Trim toile tissue or napkin designs into smaller pieces. Because smaller sections are easier to press onto curved pumpkin surfaces. However, make sure to cut out full motifs to create a seamless-looking design.

3. Apply with Mod Podge
Brush a thin layer of Mod Podge onto the pumpkin, place your cutout on top, and smooth it down gently. Continue layering until the pumpkin is covered.

PRO TIP: If you are using tissue, take a shallow dish with a little water and wet the tissue so that it is more malleable for the pumpkin surface

4. Seal Your Work
Once finished, brush another light coat of Mod Podge over the entire surface to seal and protect your design. I used a higher luster Mod Podge for this to add a little shine!

5. Add a Decorative Stem
For a luxe finishing touch, paint the stems with gold leaf paint. This small detail instantly elevates the look.

Styling Your Decoupage Pumpkins

  • Centerpieces: Cluster 3–5 pumpkins on your dining table with candles and greenery.
  • Mantels: Pair them with fall garlands or framed art for a seasonal display.
  • Entryway Table: Mix them with natural elements like acorns, pinecones, and dried leaves.
  • Reuse Year After Year: Faux pumpkins make this project sustainable and ready for next fall.

Tips & Variations

  • Experiment with other napkin prints, florals, stripes, or seasonal motifs.
  • Try metallic or pastel pumpkins for different moods.
  • Layer multiple prints for a collage-style design.
