Self Care During the Holidays — Finding Calm in the Chaos

The holidays are magical, full of twinkle lights, family time, and heartfelt traditions, but let’s be honest, they can also be a lot. Between school events, gift lists, decorating, and endless to-dos, it’s easy to lose yourself in the hustle.

That’s where self-care comes in, not as another item on your list, but as the anchor that keeps you centered and joyful through the season.

Here are my favorite, realistic ways to nurture yourself during the holidays (plus a few products and DIY comforts that help me slow down and soak up the season).

How can I practice self-care during the holidays?

The holiday season can be joyful, but it’s also a time when stress levels often rise due to busy schedules, expectations, and added responsibilities. Prioritizing self-care can help maintain balance and keep the season enjoyable. Here are some tips for self-care during the holidays:

Set Realistic Expectations

  1. Don’t Overcommit. You don’t have to attend every party or bake every cookie. It’s okay to say “no” and protect your energy. Try creating a “Yes List” — a quick jot in your notes app or planner of the things that truly bring joy to you and your family.
  2. Focus on What Matters. Prioritize connection over perfection. Whether that’s trimming the tree with your kids or hosting a cozy night in, remember: the best memories aren’t Pinterest-perfect, they’re real.

Maintain Healthy Habits

  1. Move Your Body (Your Way).
I love starting my mornings with 20 minutes of yoga. It resets my mind before the day begins — and it’s the perfect “me moment.” A comfy yoga mat and some soft background music go a long way.
  2. Eat with Intention. Yes, enjoy the cookies! But also balance festive treats with simple, nourishing meals. Keep a bowl of fresh fruit on your counter or prep easy grab-and-go snacks to stay fueled.
  3. Protect Your Sleep.
Keep a consistent bedtime routine — maybe light your favorite Voluspa candle, sip herbal tea, and turn off screens an hour before bed. Your body (and mood) will thank you.

Pamper Yourself, Your Way

  • Create a Mini Spa Night at Home.
You don’t need a reservation, just your bathroom and a little intention. Draw a warm bath, drop in a bath bomb, and follow up with your coziest robe and socks.
  • Warm & Cozy Rituals.
  • Our family recently got this Mueller Electric Kettle, and it’s made tea time a new nightly ritual. I love pairing it with an organic tea box and curling up with a good book or a self-care journal.
  • Try making your own “quiet corner”,add a soft throw, dimmed lights, and a scent that relaxes you. Even 10 minutes of calm can reset your day.

Focus on Joy, Not Perfection

  • Craft, Bake, or Create:
Self-care isn’t always bubble baths; sometimes it’s creativity! Try an easy DIY like handmade ornaments, a family baking night, or a simple garland made from dried oranges. When your hands are busy, your mind rests. Check out my post on how to make Easy DIY NYC Subway Map Ornaments.
  • Give Back:
Doing something kind for others, like donating, volunteering, or even surprising a neighbor with cookies, fills your heart in ways no gift can. Check out my honeyball post below for a fun activity for the whole family to make during the holidays.

Self-care can mean a lot of different things

For some people, self-care can mean eating well, hydrating, getting enough sleep, and exercising. I have tried to incorporate 20 minutes of yoga each morning. This sets the tone for the day and gets my endorphins going for the day!

Or it can mean some alone and quiet time. Make your surroundings soothing with tranquil music, dimmed lights, scented candles, and a cup of herbal tea. We just purchased this amazing electric kettle, and my whole family, including me, is drinking a lot more tea these days.

Some people love the idea of a face-and-body regimen, a bubble bath, and slipping into something warm and cozy. This is especially soothing during this long winter season. Or it can be a combination of all of the above!

What does self-care during the holidays mean to you?

Is it solitude, creativity, pampering — or maybe a mix of all three?

Self-care looks different for everyone, and that’s what makes it so personal and powerful. For some, it’s carving out quiet moments of stillness, lighting a candle, wrapping up in a soft throw, and sipping a cup of tea while the house is finally still. For others, it’s about creating: decorating cookies with your kids, crafting ornaments, or starting a new DIY project that brings you joy (and maybe even a little glitter on the floor!).

Maybe your version of self-care is putting on comfy slippers, queuing up a feel-good playlist, and permitting yourself to rest — no guilt, no expectations, just breathing and being.

The holidays can pull us in so many directions, but taking time for ourselves helps us show up with more patience, love, and creativity for the people we care about most.

I’d love to hear how you practice self-care during the holiday season. Do you have a favorite ritual, comfort item, or moment that helps you recharge?
Share it in the comments — your idea might inspire another mom who needs a gentle reminder to slow down and care for herself, too.
